Expansion of District Cooling for Stockholm South

sicklaProject: Expansion of the district cooling network.
Commission: Design and construction management.
Client: Fortum Värme
Year: 2007-2008

Fortum is continuously developing the district cooling system in Stockholm. It is already the biggest network in the world with a pipe length of 150 km.

In 2007 Termoekonomi received the order for design and construction management for an expansion in the south part of the network. The total distance from the existing network to the new client was 2.4 km. The route passes the well-known eco-city ”Hammarby Sjöstad”, Sickla channel and a motorway.

The pipes were design for a cooling capacity of 12 MW. We designed for plastic tubes (PE) with dimensions up to PE 400.

We used steered drilling to manage the complicated passings. Totally 700 m is realized with this technique.

The existing pumping capacity had to be increased to manage the extension of the network. Termoekonomi designed a new pump station with two pumps each with 110 kW motors. As for the pipes we also carried out the construction management.
