District cooling storage 50 000 cbm, Stockholm

Project: District cooling plant with water storage.

Commission: ”Turn-key consultancy service”.

Client: AB Fortum Värme samägt med Stockholms stad

Year: Commercial operation 2010

Capacity: 80 MW cooling

The demand for district cooling in Stockholm is steady rising year by year. This new production plant is located in the west part of the city. It is installed underground in rock caverns, constructed for this purpose. The 50,000-sqm water storage makes this plant unique in the world.

The storage is loaded with chilled water, 4-6 °C, during night by using low temperature seawater. Four chiller of totally 25 MW cooling capacity can also be used. At daytime the mode is changed and the plant delivers district cooling into the distribution network.

Stockholms district cooling network is the biggest in the world with about 150 km pipe length and well over 500 clients. It is also very environmentally friendly with low energy consumption. Heat pumps and natural cooling from seawater are used together with high efficiency water-cooled chillers. Cooling towers are normally not used.

Termoekonomi has been engaged in the project for many years. First for investigations, feasibility study and system design. Then, during realization, for design of all installations, purchase support, management for construction & installation, commissioning, training and documentation. We name this complete engagement our ”Turn-key consultancy service”.

The plant has been in commercial operation since late spring 2010 with excellent performance.
